Multiple factors in carcinogenesis.

چکیده

Before making some comments on multiple factors, I would like briefly to refer to the discussion at this conference. There has been no reference, strangely enough, to a law known as the Delaney Amendment. Asbestos is a carcinogen. It is apparently being deliberately added to certain drugs and foodstuffs by particular processing and manufacturing practices. Surely, when asbestos is introduced into foodstuffs by deliberate processing this is a clear cut contravention of the Delaney Amendment. The whole question of the relevance of the Delaney Amendment to asbestos in water is a complex legal matter. Suffice it to say that I think it is possible to develop a substantive legal argument that the deliberate discharge of carcinogens such as asbestos into water represents a contravention of the Delaney Amendment. Now with relation to multiple factors this is a fascinating area in which epidemiology has blazed the trail and toxicology has lagged sadly behind. I think that with the little we have heard here on the role of smoking and asbestos, and from the literature on the subject, it becomes clear that smoking does enhance the incidence of bronchogenic cancer following occupational exposure to asbestos. Similar considerations relate to uranium although, however, the question of the synergistic or other positive interactions between smoking and radon daughters appears somewhat compounded by the fact that silica dust may also be involved, and thus we appear to have possibly three factors: smoking, silica dust, and radon daughters. Now while it is true that

Radiation-induced Non-targeted Effect and Carcinogenesis; Implications in Clinical Radiotherapy

Bystander or non-targeted effect is known to be an interesting phenomenon in radiobiology. The genetic consequences of bystander effect on non-irradiated cells have shown that this phenomenon can be considered as one of the most important factors involved in secondary cancer after exposure to ionizing radiation. Every year, millions of people around the world undergo radiotherapy in order to cu...

Multiple genetic alterations in human carcinogenesis.

Cancer development in man appeared to be a multistage process as suggested by epidemiological studies on commonly occurring gastric, colon, and breast cancers and also on human retrovirus-related leukemia, and by the finding by physicians and surgeons of precancerous lesions for many types of neoplasias. In the last 10 years it has become evident that human cancers have multiple genetic alterat...

بررسی ارتباط ویروس اپشتن بار و ژن BARF-1 کد‌ شده توسط ویروس با آدنوکارسینوم معده

Background and purpose: Gastric carcinoma is the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide and its incidence varies considerably according to geographical location. There are multiple etiologic factors such as infection with ËBV that play a role in carcinogenesis of gastric cancer, yet there is not enough evidence about pathogenesis of ËBV and its relationship with gastric cancer. Thus, ...

Molecular Signaling in Tumorigenesis of Gastric Cancer

Gastric cancer (GC) is regarded as the fifth most common cancer and the third cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Mechanism of GC pathogenesis is still unclear and relies on multiple factors, including environmental and genetic characteristics. One of the most important environmental factors of GC occurrence is infection with Helicobacter pylori that is classified as class one carcinogens...

Environmental factors as regulators and effectors of multistep carcinogenesis.

This review highlights current knowledge of environmental factors in carcinogenesis and their cellular targets. The hypothesis that environmental factors influence carcinogenesis is widely supported by both epidemiological and experimental studies. The fact that only a small fraction of cancers can be attributed to germline mutations in cancer-related genes further buttresses the importance of ...

Performance of methylation and expression fluctuations of sonic hedgehog genes in gastric adenocarcinoma

Gastric cancer (GC) is considered as one of the most serious cancers, and in Iran, due to environmental factors in different regions, it has a high frequency. Apart from environmental factors, genetic and epigenetic ones also play a key role in the development of carcinogenesis of GC. In this regard, the study of functioning of the molecular mechanisms involved in the carcinogenesis and also tu...
